Sessions

After an initial assessment, I create a highly personalised learning plan to meet the specific needs of your child. 45-minute sessions are held weekly with two children per session to enable focused work on individual goals and literacy challenges. Sessions cost $60, with enrolment commitments for a term in advance. While I target each child’s specific literacy goals, sessions typically fit into one of three categories…

Literacy Boost

Sometimes all a child needs is some one-on-one specialist support for a few terms to bring their literacy skills up to the level of their peers. While timeframes for catch-up in reading, writing and spelling skills differ for every child, I’ll give you weekly feedback to track your child’s progress.

Dyslexia Support

Trained in the recommended ‘Structured Literacy’ approach to supporting children with dyslexia, I use highly explicit and systematic teaching methods to build on both foundational skills (decoding and spelling) and higher-level literacy skills (reading comprehension, written expression). Find out more about this method via the Dyslexia Association website.

Enrichment Learning

For Napier children with natural strengths in literacy or for parents who simply want to give their children the benefits that come from one-on-one literacy support, I offer a tailored programme to extend their skills and taking their reading, writing and spelling to an advanced level.

FAQS

My child only needs help with reading. Why are they also learning writing and spelling during sessions?

Learning reading, writing, and spelling together is crucial for developing literacy skills because of the way each pillar of literacy supports and fosters the other. Reading allows us to access and understand written information, broadening our knowledge and exposing us to different perspectives. Writing enables us to express our thoughts, ideas, and emotions, fostering creativity and critical thinking. Meanwhile, spelling ensures our written words are accurately understood, conveying our intended meaning. By mastering these skills together, individuals gain the confidence to navigate the complexities of the world, engage in meaningful conversations, and contribute to society in a meaningful way.

How long will it take for my child to catch up to their peers?

While it’s not possible to predict firm timeframes around catch-up literacy support and I work to every child’s personal pace, my initial assessment will enable you to understand where your child’s literacy skills sit relative to what could be expected of their age group. Weekly feedback on progress will be specific and measurable, enabling you as parents to gauge your child’s progress and decide term-by-term if you wish to continue with literacy support.

What if my child can’t attend a session?

Consistency is key when it comes to learning. Regular attendance at school and tutoring sessions is crucial for your child to make steady progress and achieve their full potential. I understand that sometimes children may be absent due to illness, school trips or other unforeseen circumstances. To accommodate this, I have spare spaces available for make-up sessions throughout the week. Please contact me to let me know if your child will be away to arrange an alternative session. Payment is required whether your child attends their scheduled session or not. This ensures your child’s spot is reserved for the term. No refunds or cancellations will be accepted once the term has commenced. I offer two payment options: bulk payment (pay the term up front) or weekly payments.

What makes Literacy Connect different from other Napier literacy support programmes?

By being small and owner-operated, we are able to teach according to best-practice and tailor our methods to each child rather than needing to subscribe to rigid standards and techniques used in nationwide literacy and reading recovery programmes. Your child will be taught directly by me, a skilled and specifically trained literacy support teacher.
